This spring, Kentucky students pursuing a career in skilled trades got a boost from legislators. Governor Andy Beshear signed a bill that enables students studying trades like HVAC, electric, and plumbing to enroll in dual credit courses, combining classroom learning with hands-on experience. This initiative aims to ease the transition from education to the workforce and address the growing need for skilled workers.
With trade school enrollment at an all-time high and wages rising, the bill is expected to give students a competitive edge. The legislation, supported by state officials, reflects a shifting attitude towards vocational training as a viable career path.
According to the Kentucky Careers & Technical College System website, dual credit classes give students the chance to earn college credit by taking one or more college-level courses while in high school. The dual credits count towards both high school and college simultaneously.
Dual credit courses can help:
- Save money on college tuition
- Save time and earn a college degree faster
- Learn more about your career interest now
- Increase your chances of completing a college degree
When students graduate high school and enroll in their technical programs, they enter with credits already completed, allowing them to move more quickly toward graduation.
