
Kentucky’s construction industry is a hotbed of in-demand jobs. With more than 80,000 positions needed in the construction industry, there is no shortage of options for people considering a career in construction.
But how are these in-demand jobs identified and counted? The website KYSTATS uses “data to estimate how occupations are expected to change over time. This includes the number of job openings expected to be generated from economic growth, workers exiting the workforce, or workers transferring to new occupations. Estimates are produced for five and ten year horizons.”
In examining Kentucky’s construction industry, the top five in-demand positions are:
Construction Laborers: 16,766 openings
Construction laborers perform a wide range of physical tasks on construction sites. They assist skilled tradespeople, operate hand and power tools, and prepare sites by cleaning and removing debris. They also may be involved in digging trenches, setting up scaffolding, and mixing and pouring concrete.
Electricians: 10,897 openings
Electricians install and maintain electrical systems in buildings. Their work includes wiring, electrical panel installation, and troubleshooting electrical issues. They ensure that electrical systems comply with safety regulations and codes, and they often work on both residential and commercial projects.
Carpenters: 9,872 openings
Carpenters construct, install, and repair structures made from wood and other materials. Their work includes building frameworks, installing doors and windows, and crafting cabinets and furniture. Carpenters often read blueprints and follow building plans to meet the specifications of their projects.
First-Line Supervisors/Foremen: 7,148 openings
First-line supervisors oversee the activities of construction workers. They coordinate and monitor work, ensure compliance with safety regulations, and manage schedules and budgets. Supervisors play a critical role in maintaining productivity and quality on construction sites.
Plumbers/Pipefitters: 6,651 openings
Plumbers and pipefitters install and repair piping systems that carry water, gas, and other liquids. Their work includes fitting and welding pipes, troubleshooting plumbing issues, and ensuring systems meet building codes. They work on a variety of projects, including residential, commercial, and industrial buildings.
