I Build America – Kentucky is dedicated to celebrating the women of construction. Women are a vital part of our industry, and there are female leaders at all levels of construction work. From foreman to company owners and executives, construction wouldn’t be the industry it is without its female employees. What was your path to a career in construction?
I began working summers while in college for the KY Transportation Cabinet. After college I worked for the cabinet full time but after a few years I decided to move to the private sector. I have spent the past 6 years working for Hinkle and it has been very fulfilling.
What do you like most about working in construction?
I enjoy the people. You won’t find a better community. You are also always learning something new every day and the people you encounter make it that much easier to want to learn.
Have you seen changes for women in construction over the course of your career?
I started out in Eastern Kentucky and there were very few women in the industry 13 years ago, especially in that region. Most of the time I was the only woman in the room and even now I sometimes I am. However, I see more women at each level of the organization throughout the industry.
If you were to give young women (high schoolers) advice about beginning a career in construction, what would you say?
When you have a seat the table make sure you always raise your hand and speak your opinion. If you know what you are doing then don’t hesitate to let them know. Don’t hesitate to ask questions. I love my job and I have been fortunate enough have great coworkers, make sure you find a job you are happy with.
