It’s Women in Construction Week! I Build America – Kentucky is taking the opportunity to share the stories of the women across the state who make up our great industry. The stories of these women show the diverse backgrounds, interests, skills, and talents that are part of the work we do–and we encourage more women of all ages and interests to consider careers in construction.
You can follow along as the nation celebrates its female construction workforce. Check out the hashtag #WICWeek2022 and #IBuildAmericaKY!
The Women of Kentucky’s Workforce: Meet Kristin
Name: Kristin Floyd
Position: Underground Project Manager
Company: Rogers Group, Inc.
Years Working In Construction: Almost 3 years
In your experience, what do women bring to the construction industry?
Two things a lot of women excel at are multi-tasking and problem solving. The mining/construction industry is full of situations that require a person to multitask or solve a problem on the fly. Putting those inherent skills to work can allow a woman to excel in the industry.
In what ways does your company support more women joining the industry?
One way we support more women joining the industry is through summer internships for college students. We are always looking for that next generation leader and summer internships are a great way to find that individual.
What do you like most about working in construction?
I like having the opportunity to be out in the field on a regular basis. By being out in the field I get to see what is designed on paper become a reality.
If you were to give young women (high schoolers) advice about beginning a career in construction, what would you say?
To any young women out there I would say give the unknown a chance. I always knew I wanted to be an engineer but when I chose Mining Engineering, I did not know what I was getting into. However, it turned out to be a very good decision. Sometimes the unknown leads you down the right path.
